Everybody remembers their first sunburn of the season. That’s why we’re on a mission to help you stay protected, so you can keep providing this summer! Each year nearly 100,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with skin cancer, which is three times more than all other cancers combined. Additionally, 2 in 3 Kiwis are diagnosed with a form of non-melanoma skin cancer at some point during their lifetime. But the good news… 90% of these diagnoses are preventable by incorporating slip, slop, slap, and wrap into your daily routine. From September through to April, from 10am – 4pm it is essential to protect yourself while you’re in the mountains, on the water, around reflective surfaces such as sand or concrete, if you’re spending long periods of time in direct sunlight, or if you have a health condition making you sensitive to the sun.
Sun Safety and UV Radiation
Here in New Zealand, the temperature is not a good indicator for when you need to apply sun protection as the harsh UV radiation doesn’t wait for a hot day! It is damaging, even on the cooler and cloudy days as the UVR (Ultraviolet Radiation) is not related to heat or light, therefor we can’t see or feel it, often until it is too late.
