The Fiordland herd is the only free range Wapiti herd in the Southern Hemisphere. On the 3rd of March 1905, 18 animals were received as a gift to New Zealand from president Theodore Roosevelt. The Wapiti were taken on the government steamer Hinemoa, to the head of George Sound in Fiordland. A harsh environment, greed and interspecies competition over the years all but wiped out the original blood line.

In 1993 the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation was formed with the aim to educate and promote public awareness of the herd, removal of red deer / hybrid animals, and also manage the 25 highly coveted balloted hunting blocks.

Stoney Creek has partnered with the FWF to provide the ultimate gear to tackle the punishing southern elements, enabling people to experience the ultimate trophy animal in their element.
