Stoney Creek Clothing as an Insulator

Stoney Creek Clothing as an Insulator

Dressing in layers is an efficient way to keep out the cold. This is the best way to be both flexible and versatile in the clothes you wear to work with the conditions and when the going gets hot, you can strip off the layers.

Layer One - Base Layer

A base layer next to the skin works as both a heat insulator and to transports moisture. Moving away moisture (wicking) from the skin is important since water conducts heat 25 times more efficiently than air. A base layer made from Stoney Creek's Powder Dry is superior to cotton, as cotton absorbs moisture and doesn't dry as well.

Powder Dry keeps your drier by wicking away the moisture from the skin and spreading the moisture over a much larger surface area, helping evaporation and reducing the dry time, also as the fabric is breathable it doesn't restrict your bodies natural breathing process.

Layer Two - Mid Layer

A mid-layer adds extra insulation, therefore retaining body heat. The mid-layer creates an insulating layer of air. The more air in the clothes the better the insulation. In cold weather or when involved in less activity a thicker layer is needed.

Stoney Creek offers Performance Plus, Micro Plus and Windproof Plus as mid-layers for insulation.

Layer Three - Outer Layer

The outer layer works as a wind and rain repellent shell to protect against external cooling and keeping that warmth bewtween layer one and three. At the same time it is important that the outer layer is made of fabric which is breathable. There's no point protecting your body from rain and wind, then getting all sweaty on the inside, this is where fabric breathability is important.

Stoney Creek manufactures outer layer rainwear gear with exclusive fabrics that have a built in membrane in them. These membranes prevent the outside elements from coming in and at the same time provide for moisture vapour transfer from the inside to the outside. Also these fabrics have an inner mesh that serves a dual purpose of protecting the membrane in the fabric and to also remove moisture from the body (wicking) and help move it outside.
